Jemele Hill: Stick to Sports
I was surprised to hear that Jemele Hill was suspended by ESPN for two weeks today. On her Twitter feed she was advocating for a boycott of advertisers for Jerry Jones. Jerry Jones is the owner of the Dallas Cowboys and one of the richest men in America. He has stated that anyone kneeling for the National Anthem will be punished. It is a very delicate time for the NFL right now. Vice President Mike Pence left a game yesterday in Indianapolis in which the jersey of Hall of Fame QB Peyton Manning was to be retired. He was told by President Trump to leave the game if any players knelt during the national anthem.
Jemele initially was reprimanded by her bosses at ESPN for calling Donald Trump a white supremacist. She did not air these comments during her segment with Michael Smith. She said it on her Twitter feed. Jemele Hill has 781,000 followers on Twitter. Besides her very informed opinion on all things sports, she has quite a following on social media. I have some problems with Donald Trump justifying white supremacists as fine people. They were shouting Jews will not replace us while carrying tiki torches. One of their supporters rammed a car into a group of people leaving a counter protest. Heather Heyer lost her life in this conflagration. The act of using a car to kill someone is right out of the ISIS playbook. Why wasn't it called a terrorist act by our President?
I work at a Charter School. I value my job and the ability to support my Family. My comments on politics or sports will always be tempered by the desire to not alienate my employer. I am a Committee Person in the 36th Ward of the Democratic Party of the City of Philadelphia. I help to register voters and I work the polls on election day as a Majority Inspector. I understand politics and the importance of civic participation. I will mot put my employer in a position to choose whether I am a liability based on inflammatory statements on my social media profile. Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee has taken his criticism of the President to a new level. He referred to the White House as an adult day care center. He is not running for reelection and understands that it is still a nation of free speech. Donald Trump has unleashed a Twitter storm in response. These guys get paid to engage in politics.

I admire Robin Roberts and Michael Strahan on Good Morning America. I also like Shannon Sharpe and Cris Carter as Sportscasters. Cris used to have a greater role on Inside the NFL but that show was not renewed. You don't see Dan Marino on televsion too much anymore. Tom Jackson, formerly of the Denver Broncos, was a victim of a reduction in force by ESPN. This sports flagship purged many on air personalities due to the diffusion of the television audience to many other outlets. Jemele is in the enviable position of still having gainful employment. Michael Irvin is out there somewhere along with Deion Sanders. I haven't seem them yet this year as my time watching the NFL has diminished. I am tired of the line between sports and politics being crossed.
Some of my Friends are boycotting the NFL because Colin Kaepernik cannot find employment. I don't feel sorry for Colin because he was a $100 million QB who decided to make social justice his priority after losing his starting job. I am a Philadelphia Eagles fan who will watch my team regardless of the social protests swirling around the game. Black folks protest. Trump protests. I just want to enjoy one of my favorite past times. I realize that head trauma might change the way the game is played. Retired players are suffering from debilitating injuries, At least they are not brushing the dangers of football under the rug. I wan Jemele Hill and all other sports personalities to stick to sports. CNN is doing a great job of covering politics.
