The Massacre in Las Vegas Strikes at the Heart of America
I watched with horror the staccato sounds of gunfire raining down on the 22,000 people who attended the Route 91 Harvest Festival concert. Jason Aldean was performing when a deranged gunman began mowing down innocent fans of country music. Many of the revelers thought that the sounds were fireworks. Mr. Aldean was not aware of the fact that Stephen Paddock had declared war on anyone in the murderous path of the bullets that he fired. It is heartbreaking to read the stories of the victims. Who woke up Sunday thinking that it might be their last day walking on this earthly plane.
I attended Mass at the Church of the Redeemer on Sunday. Pastor Hughes preached out of the Book of Joshua and the message was 'The Show Must Go On'. I think he has been preaching in reference to himself recently. He is leaving soon and his messages have related to surviving the storm and other maladies. He did not reach his 4th pastoral anniversary before the call of God will lead him somewhere else.he is a dynamic preacher with awesome potential. I am glad that Sunday was not my ending. Those of us who believe in Jesus must understand that our soul is the ultimate battleground.
The gun control debate will probably last for awhile. After Sandy Hook and San Bernardino the Democrats tried to initiate the discussion again. President Trump campaigned stridently on the 2nd Amendment right to bear arms. He pounced on the Pulse Night Club massacre in an effort to support his eventual Muslim ban. The gentleman who murdered those innocent people professes fealty to Islam but was an American citizen. In fact, white men have been the perpetrators behind the majority of mass murders in our country. It is reported that we have a mass shooting almost everyday. Let that sink in for a moment. Some families in our country will mourn the untimely death of people caught at the end of hot lead.
I mention the Heart of America in the title because I really feel that way. I am not into country music but the people that attended were fans. They came from far and wide to enjoy this music which speaks to a large demographic. I listened to a few Jason Aldean songs on YouTube this morning. One of his songs was entitled 'Any Old Bar Stool'. It sounded the familiar theme of love lost and possible regained. It speaks to an innocent time that we might never get back. This week Rep. Steve Scalise was back in Congress. He was the victim of a shooting at a baseball game played by our legislators. He suffered debilitating injuries at the hand of another demented shooter. He says that his belief in gun rights is more fortified than ever. Really!!

The families that are planning funerals have to wonder why. The individuals that are rehabbing from horrific injuries have to question the left turn that they could have made in an effort to find cover. The rest of the country and people around the world are trying to figure out why one of the greates countries in the world in subject to so much gun violence. President Trump criticized the Mayor of London for a few acts of terrorism. Why won't he address the continual bloodshed in out country without worrying about his political base? He fears showing a softer side. It is okay when low income people kill each other. The refrain is usually that knowledgeable gun owners don't perform random acts of violence. The shooter in this instance was apparently wealthy and retired. He rained terror on a group of people that are surely in the Make America Great Again realm. Rest in Peace.
P.S. There was another mass murder at a country music bar called the Borderline Bar & Grill. Some of the people in the bar had survived the Las Vegas shooting. Can we talk about gun control yet?
