MLK Celebration at Bethlehem Baptist Church was Awesome
I had the occasion to attend a celebration in memory of Martin Luther King yesterday. It was held at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Spring House, PA. The program featured a diverse array of faith leaders and a dynamic keynote speaker. I was in attendance to support my wife Shawn who is a member of a choir at Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church. There was also choirs there from Salem Baptist Church and Bethlehem Baptist Church. It is primarily an African American Church located in a bucolic area of Montgomery County.
I arrived at the ceremony early to get a good seat. We had been there before for the Homegoing service of Sylvia Jones. Sylvia was married to Neil Jones and was the Mother of two beautiful daughters before she succumbed to an aggressive form of cancer. Reverend Quann is the Pastor of this historic church. They will celebrate 130 years of existence later this year. There was also a march yesterday from Wissahickon High School to the church. Martin Luther King was assassinated in 1968. It has been 50 years since his death. Many things have changed for the better for people of color. In many instances, we still need to work on improving.

I got a chance to catch up with some fellow Howard alumni yesterday. Doctor Michael Adams in a trustee at the church. We both were members of Enon at one time. I also saw Victor and Karla Harmon and two of their children. I met another graduate from 1998 and saw some Howard license plates in the parking lot. I was in touch with Jon Wright via text and we will be planning birthday parties for those of us born in 1968. I also worshipped next to my Friend Theresa Copeland.
I have two funerals to attend this Wednesday. Charlotte Thomas is the grandmother of two of my childhood friends: Derrick and Darryl Thomas. She was 101 years old. Brenner Beattie was the Mother of the Beattie Brothers. I went to school with Anthony. I will make both of these events to pay my respects. I have a great appreciation for life at 54 years of age. My Brother Gary did not live to see 55. Carolyn Fluellen aka Rae did not make it to 50. I am taking this time to really love life.
There is an ongoing controversy right now based on comments made by President Donald Trump. He referred to African, Haitian and El Salvadoran immigrants as being from shithole countries. He would rather have people come here from Norway. The racist comments continue from this man. I wonder how his base can continue to support this leader who just wants sound bites. Reverend Waller preached the keynote sermon yesterday out of the Book of Samuel, Chapter 17, Verse 45. It was entitled 'How to Pick a Fight'. In spite of the problems that our community has to fight, we have to focus on a few problems and go hard. Education and housing fall within his purview. I share those concerns and continue to focus on my community and what I can to help improve it.
I felt really good about the sermon and the service. I did not do a service project today because it is very cold outside. I watched Netflix and now I am reading and writing. This is my form of journaling and I want to increase my audience this year. I have some financial goals this year and I have started my workouts. I want to attend more cultural events and expand on my jazz intake. I thank Dr. Martin Luther King for his sacrifices to make our country better. His selfless actions in the face of tremendous pressure and odds were life changing.
