Philadelphia Eagles: Thank You!!

On Sunday, February 4th, the Philadelphia Eagles won Super Bowl LII 41 - 33 against the New England Patriots.  We won with a backup quarterback, Nick Foles, while being pegged as the underdogs by the Vegas odds makers for the third straight game.  Some fortunate people placed six figure bets on the Eagles.  They went home very happy.  For the rest of us the feeling of vindication and satisfaction was immense.  We are done being the bridesmaids.  We have joined the rest of the NFC East teams that have won rings.  We will wear the crown for a year or until we relinquish the title to a worthy competitor.

A parade is scheduled for tomorrow.  It will go from Lincoln Financial Field, down Broad Street and to the Art Museum.  Many people will take pictures at the Rocky Statue.  He was a mythical figure based in Philadelphia who conquered the boxing world with grit and determination.  How he beat Drago without getting his neck separated from his head still confuses me.  The school district has closed schools for the day.  I will watch at Broad & Federal and catch the subway and subsurface cars to 22nd & Market and walk to the Art Museum.  It will be a joyous day and I will soak it in.

When I first started watching the NFL I was a Dallas Cowboy fan.  They were America's team at the time.  Roger Staubach was the clean cut QB who had a military background and was photogenic.  The Miami Dolphins were also a favorite in my house.  This was partly due to their prominence in the Sears Wish Book.  I was an Eagles fan within two years of that time.  Beating the Dallas Cowboys was the highlight of our season and vaunted us into our first Super Bowl with Ron Jaworski at the helm.  Jaworski threw three interceptions and Jim Plunkett and the Raiders sent us home unfulfilled.

We had a great run under Andy Reid.  He was not a great playoff coach.  We went to four straight NFC Championship games and won one.  I was at the game when we beat the Atlanta Falcons to advance to the first Super Bowl matchup against the Patriots.  It was so cold that day that Michael Vick looked like he wanted to be anywhere but in Philly.  We won a game in which the feeling of euphoria was amazing.  Donovan McNabb had been a very accurate QB until that time.  He also threw three interceptions in the Super Bowl and we went home mad again.  It was stated that the Patriots stole our signals.  The loss was the beginning of the end of the T.O. era.  It would take us 15 years to get back to the big game.  What a long wait that was.

We were on a major roll until we played the Los Angeles Rams.  Carson Wentz broke the Eagles record for touchdowns in a season with 33.  Unfortunately he sustained a season ending injury in the game and the dread set in.  Sportscasters on the Fanatic were drowning in misery.  I held out the hope that our team was solid and would persevere.  I wanted to prove ESPN personality Bomani Jones wrong.  He said something to the effect that Philly sports fans are always disappointed in the end.  I was riding with my team until the end!!

The Super Bowl exceeded all of my expectations.  We watch at Kia and Leslie's house.  It was a small but intimate crowd.  We had excellent food and margaritas for days.  The game broke records for the 1000 yards of offense that was generated.  Tom Brady dropped a pass but Nick Foles caught a TD pass on a play called the Philly Special.  Foles threw one interception on a play that Alshon Jeffries almost turned into Super Bowl lore.  We converted two fourth down plays.  We created a timely turnover with a little over two minutes left.  We took down Tom Brady and the vaunted Patriots.  We are the Super Bowl champions.  Doug Pederson did in two years what Andy Reid could not do in like twelve years.  We are the Champions!!  We are the Champions!!  Thank you to all of the players, coaches and administrators for a job well done.  Thanks to the fans for suffering with us until we sealed the deal.  Go Eagles.
