The 2018 Winter Olympics could help the Korean Pensinsula!!

The last year of nuclear tests have been terrifying for the world at large.  North Korea is a dictatorship headed by Kim Jong-Un.  Under his leadership he has tested more than 80 missiles.  It is a wonder that no one has been killed.  There are some reports that one of the missiles exploded in the country but their secretive news agencies won't reveal this to be a fact.  Many of the people that receive news in North Korea only read or hear what the government wants them to hear.  Hunger is a problem and citizens must cheer wildly whenever their Supreme Leader is in their presence.  The consequences for lack of enthusiasm could be death,

President Trump has blamed the Bush, Clinton and Obama administrations for not 'dealing' with the threat from North Korea during the last twenty-five years.  He feels that bluster and threats will lead this country of twenty-five million people to voluntarily relinquish their nuclear weapons.  We have tried to pressure China to cut down on trade with this Communist ally.  They will not do it.  They have been sanctioned by a number of countries but they have ways to get around these financial penalties.

No one wants a nuclear war.  Even though President Trump has threatened 'fire and fury' I don't think he understands the consequences of nuclear war in such a densely populated area.  The United States has nearly 35,000 troops in South Korea and 40,000 in Japan.  This amount of personnel show the strategic importance of the Asian peninsula.  We cannot forget the importance of diplomacy in spite of the intransigence of the North Korean leadership.  Mr. Jong-Un seems to take glee in the launching of missiles.  He has his binoculars out and smiles effusively during and after a launch.  The response to these actions cannot be a preemptive strike.

It is refreshing to see the North Korean overtures to South Korea during the winter Olympics.  They marched in together under one flag during the opening ceremonies.  The women of South and North Korea combined their hockey teams and  have agreed to train together at a resort in North Korea before the games begin.  I read that there is a threat of defection from North Korean athletes but the consequences for their families back home would be devastating.  Many people that live in South Korea doubt the sincerity of these actions.  Many of us that see no win whatsoever in nuclear war are secretly cheering for a successful outcome to this fledgling partnership.

Kim Yo Jung is the secret weapon that has riveted the news coming from the Winter Olympics.  The Netherlands now leads the medal count but the competition is secondary for political observers like myself.  Shani Davis refused to march in with the U.S. delegation because he wasn't chosen to carry a flag.  Oh well.  Vice President Pence avoided speaking to Miss Jung even though they were in the same suite.  How diplomatic is that?  She seems like a charming emissary in spite of the deadly tendencies of her brother.  If we can deflect from war and missile launches for a few weeks then the Olympic games will have accomplished their intended effects.  The joy of competition should overtake hostility towards each other.  The lessening of tensions between the Korean countries and their continued dialogue could be a harbinger of peaceful relations going forward.
