The Gun Debate will never gain traction under this Administration!!
There are a number of people in the United States this weekend who will ponder what they could have done differently on Valentine's Day this year. Maybe they should have kept their child home from school on a sick day. Maybe they should have planned their trip during this week. One Father wondered if he told his daughter that he loved her. It is such a heart wrenching time to think about what one could have done to save or protect a loved one. The scene has been repeated so often that people outside the U.S. must wonder if we really care about our citizens. There is a movement called Rachel's challenge going on that remembers a young lady killed in the Columbine shooting in 1999. Oh how I wish that the tragedies could have ended with the tragic loss of her life.
Nikolas Cruz did not care what the plans were for the future of the students and staff that he gunned down that day. He didn't care that some of these students were scholars and volunteers. He grabbed his assault rifle with the intent of inflicting major pain at a high school that he was expelled from for bad behavior. One of his public defenders indicated that he is a broken individual. He lived in foster care and was emotionally distraught. President Trump referenced mental health issues in his speech that he will repeat as more school shootings occur. Not one Republican official mentioned the fact that these weapons should be severely restricted from civilian hands. I wonder how a truly mentally ill person could pull a fire drill, murder people, flee and then eat a meal like nothing really happened.

The FBI has admitted that it missed warning signs from Mr. Cruz. He posted on an Instagram account that he wanted to be a professional school shooter. When did this get to be a career aspiration? Senator Ted Cruz, no relation, mentioned that if the Obama administration would have passed his Cruz-Grassley bill then violent criminals would not be able to obtain assault weapons. This young man was not a violent criminal before he plead guilty to killing 17 people, injuring many others and maiming the psyche of the almost 3,000 students that attended school on this idyllic campus. How does mentioning the Obama adminitration save the lives of innocent children going forward?
On Saturday many of the students that attend this school are calling on their elected officials to step up to the plate to protect them. They are the children that will eventually lead our society. Why should they continue to bear witness to bloodshed on school campuses nationwide? Representative Steve Scalise is a Congressman from Louisiana who was shot while practicing for a softball game between elected officials last year. He is the third ranking member of the Republican leadership team. His injuries were extensive and required numerous surgeries. One would think that he would raise his voice against the scourge of gun violence. Surprisingly, he is more in support of arming citizens to the hilt. When will this end?
Alyssa Alhadeff and Scott Beigel are two of the 17 victims who will not be able to worship at a House of Prayer this week. They join victims such as those of the Pulse Nightclub massacre that now will be remembered for the inability of the U.S. to protect its citizens from the instant availability of killing machines. I just read this morning where President Trump is blaming the shooting on the Russia investigation. He still has not mentioned restricting access to bump stocks or assault weapons. I am preparing to attend church this morning. I will pray for my family's safety and that of the citizens of the United States. I will pray for our elected officials to disregard the NRA and vote for the future of the random citizens who will be killed by deranged individuals like Nikolas Cruz. God Bless the memory of the victims and Godspeed for the recovery of the family members left to grieve.
