The Starbucks Incident is Puzzling!!

Philadelphia was in the news for some crazy reasons this past week.  A Southwest Airlines plane had to make an emergency landing yesterday due to a malfunction.  A woman from New Mexico, Jennifer Riordan, lost her life during the harrowing landing.  This plane was on its way to Dallas but was diverted because of this tragedy.  Many of the passengers were calling loved ones to give their last goodbyes.  On the positive side, the Flyers and Sixers are in the playoffs.  I rode the subway with the Flyers fans today.  Good luck against the Penguins.  The other news story became a national referendum on race.

Two African American males were arrested in a Starbucks while sitting there waiting for a friend.  It was a Starbucks on 18th & Spruce Street in Center City.  I received a Starbucks gift card from my nieces Saba and KiKi this Christmas.  I am not considered a frequent visitor but I love the one located in the Barnes & Noble on 18th & Walnut Streets.  It is a great place to sit and read and observe people.  Some people are calling for a boycott.  Others are calling for the female manager that called the police to be terminated.  I hate for anyone to lose their job.  I can curtail my spending at this franchise.

The President of Starbucks flew to Philly to meet with the affected young men.  They were peaceful as they were arrested.  Patrons of the establishment were asking the officers what were the men beig arrested for.  The person who they were waiting for is a real estate developer.  Mayor Kinney bemoaned the fact that our city was in the national media for something so petty and demeaning.  The new term is 'Sitting while Black'.  Driving while black resulted in the death and imprisonment of Sandra Bland and Philando Castile.  Colin Kaepernik is still trying to find a job after taking a stand against the murders of unarmed Black men and women at the hands of the police.  The crisis in regards to race is still real in our country.

I am not motivated enough to protest in one of the stores.  I can avoid the store in which this incident happened.  I wonder how this manager feels with all of the national attention that she has garnered.  The official line is that she has been moved to another store.  It was just reported that other employees of color felt threatened by her demeanor towards them.  I stop at the Starbucks on 16th & Market Streets sometimes.  The crew there is diverse and friendly.  I never felt like I was less than a valued customer.  The response of the President and the half day of diversity training might be enough to settle the furor that was created nationwide.

Economic boycotts have changed the trajectory of businesses and television programs.  Bill O'Reilly was once one of the most powerful television personalities until his advertisers left him in droves after the harassment payments to women were publicized.  Laura Ingrahamhad to apologize to a Parkland shooting survivor after his Twitter followers were instructed to write her advertisers and a steady trickle of defectors ensued.  My hope is that ugly incidents like the one that occurred last week will become a thing of the past.  We all want to be treated fairly in any venue that we enter.  I will report back on the progress of this unsettling dilemma.
